Referral for diagnosis and management

For a typical presentation, referral may not be necessary. If there is any doubt a referral to CDAMS (Cognitive Dementia and Memory Service) or consultation with a geriatrician, psychogeriatrician or neurologist can confirm the diagnosis.[1]

Referral to specialist diagnostic services is required if:

  • Unsure of diagnosis
  • Patient is young or atypical
  • Symptoms and signs are atypical
  • Psychotic or severe behavioural disturbance occur
  • Multiple, complex co-morbidities exist
  • Or considering medication [2]
