Non-pharmacological interventions
Ongoing management post diagnosis should include the exploration of behavioural issues of concern that may impact significantly on the carer, family and care workers. Aim to manage physiological needs that could trigger behaviours of concern such as:
- pain management
- continence management
- language or communication difficulties
- daily routine modifications
- side effects of medication
- falls risk
- environmental modifications
Non-pharmacological interventions may include a variety of stimulating activities, techniques or therapies. Provide the patient and carer with information on education programs and services that provide activities and therapies for people with dementia.
Recreational group activities, exercise, behaviour management, reminiscence therapy and music therapy may improve or delay behavioural symptoms.
