Maximising independence
Deteriorating memory can affect a persons ability to perform daily activities including household tasks, dressing and bathing, oral care and meal preparation.
Aim to promote and maintain the patient's independence, including mobility and falls risk by referring to an Occupational Therapist for assessment of the home environment and ability to perform daily activities.
Interventions that alter interactions and the environment are recommended in tier 2 and tier 3 of the seven-tiered model of management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. Social and environmental interventions may possibly prevent or delay the development of BPSD.
Referral to a Living at Home Assessment service should be considered to maximise independent activity, enhance function and maintain or adapt skills.
